4/7/2003 edition Racecaller Betting Tips The first race at Cheltenham last Saturday was a 2YO Colts and Geldings race over 1000 metres on a rain affected track. There were 16 runners in the field including five first starters. Here's the "information" given to us by the racecaller about first starter My Harley as the horses were entering the barriers. By the way, it finished tenth. "My Harley's in the market. Number 10. It's shorter on track. A lot shorter than $10.50. My Harley - it's a tip." As the racecaller was telling us that Sky Racing showed My Harley's tote price as $8.90. What sort of a "tip" was My Harley? On track it opened at $4.00, eased out to $9.00 and started at $8.00. On another day a racecaller could have easily told you that it was not a "tip" but had gone for a bath or got the wobbles in the betting. There were also any number of horses significantly shorter on track than on the tote because the bookmaker starting price market was a very tight 158% compared to the tote's pretty ordinary 120%. For example: Tulum was $7.00 on track compared to $9.80 on the tote. Why didn't the racecaller refer to The Goon, a real "tip" from the track, though long term it is no good taking the shorter odds? Why didn't the racecaller point out how tight the bookmaker odds were at 158%? That explained why tote odds were superior. We believe it is best for racecallers to stick at what most of them are good at - calling the races. Leave the tipping and price assessments of horses to others.
