4/4/2003 edition John Hawkes With the dominance of Sydney racing by these two trainers, a number of trends are appearing. Have you noticed how often the betting public gets it wrong when these trainers have more than one runner in a race? Invariably their short priced favourites are beaten by another one of their runners at comparatively good odds. It happened again last Saturday at Rosehill. The John Hawkes' trained Gabfest was sent out at the absurdly short odds of $3.20 first up in a Group 3 Listed race run over 1100 metres. Sure enough Bradshaw who finished a disappoiting ninth at his last start, nearly two months earlier, put in a huge form reversal and won. The 7YO gelding was also specked on track from $14.00 and started at $9.00. However, Gabfest finished eighth. The money was correct with two Gai Waterhouse trained horses, National Treasure, $3.00 into $2.60 and Bollinger, $4.20 into $3.20 both winning. However Statesmanship firmed from $3.00 to $2.70, poor odds in a reasonably open field of 16, and finished tenth. If you have been following the Sydney Money talks - betting tips from the track information each week you will have seen how disappointing some Gai Waterhouse trained horses are when they firm significantly in the betting ring. Some bettors are losing money - big money - backing these horses. Don't join them. This edition of Punt to Win: Back Tote Longshots?
