3/1/2003 edition Betting Tips: 1. Make a note of which jockeys ride well from a wide barrier. It doesn't take any special skill to ride a horse that always leads, but it does take that bit extra to consistently give horses good runs from wide barriers. 2. Take note of a horse that has a new jockey. Particularly if the jockey has won on the horse or ridden a good placing on the horse. 3. You can get hints about trainers' intentions on horses resuming from a spell by the jockey given the ride. 4. There are usually quite a few smart apprentice jockeys who will more than hold their own against the senior jockeys, even without their claims. Finding these apprentices, particularly if they are not mentioned in the media, can pay off handsomely. 5. Don't get put off a horse just because of the jockey. If most punters do, you will invariably get much better odds which can more than compensate for the slightly inferior skills of the jockey. 6. Be very wary of horses with high weights with apprentices used to reduce the weight. Assume the horse has the high weight. If you don't like it with that weight, then unless the apprentice is above average, the weight drop will not compensate for the apprentice's inferior skills.
