2/8/2002 edition Les Ross It often takes a good horse to make owners and punters sit up and take notice of a trainer. Well, Les Ross, who is based at Eagle Farm has that horse, 3YO gelding Smart Chariot. Smart Chariot now has nine wins and three placings from only 14 starts. On July 6 the gelding was an easy winner of the Sunshine Coast Guineas over 1600 metres, despite starting from barrier 15 of 19 and covering ground. Then last Saturday, only three weeks later, Les Ross entered the gelding in a 3YO $40,000 Stakes race at Eagle Farm over 1200 metres. Despite the tough task, dropping back substantially in distance with only a three weeks break, Smart Chariot won again. He started at $6.00 in the field of 16, though only paid $4.70 on the local tote. It was a huge training feat. After the race, interviewed by Larry Olsen on Sky Racing, Les Ross said: "He's a good horse. Good horses can do that. It was a good ride by Mattie ( Matthew Dracos)... He's definitely a Stradbroke horse. If he doesn't win the Stradbroke next year with four legs I'll just about walk down the straight with nothing on." We'll be hearing a lot more about Les Ross.
