2/5/2003 edition Quick Betting Tips John Hawkes The Hawkes' Stable did it again last Saturday. Another successful state switch. Desert Sashay won the first race at Randwick with $14.00 bet. The 6YO gelding's previous eight starts were in Queensland. Mind you, Desert Sashay had only one win and one second from 14 starts over 1400 metres, the distance of Saturday's race. That lone win was at his last start, 13 days earlier. "I don't like Cognac Trader" That's what we heard from a media tipster. What was the reason given? That you should ignore his
previous run in the $2,400,000 Doncaster Handicap because he had a soft
run. We're not aware that horses get soft runs in a big field in a two million dollars
race. "It's a pity about the sratchings" That's what we were told by a tipster about the Moonee Valley meeting. Why? Because we were told bigger fields make the racing more interesting and give you "better value". Again incorrect. Do the totes reduce their percentage cut for bigger fields? No. Do the bookmakers bet to markets closer to 100% for bigger fields? No. If anything, they bet to higher percentages. Bigger fields make winners harder to select. Now that cannot possibly be "better value". This edition of Punt to Win: You Need Top Odds It
is just about impossible to get a high enough
strike rate backing short priced tote favourites
and the poor value tote horses to make up for
the big unders on the tote. Short
